Classic Tacos

Tacos are a versatile and delicious meal that can be customized with various fillings and toppings. Whether using ground beef, shredded chicken, or a vegetarian alternative, this recipe provides a simple way to create a flavorful taco experience at home.

Ingredients
  

  • 8 small tortillas corn or flour
  • 500 g ground beef or chicken, pork, or beans for a vegetarian option
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ cup water or broth
  • 1 cup shredded cheese cheddar, cotija, or your choice
  • 1 cup lettuce shredded
  • 1 tomato diced
  • ½ cup sour cream or Mexican crema
  • ½ cup salsa
  • 1 avocado sliced or mashed into guacamole
  • Fresh cilantro and lime wedges for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Prepare the filling – Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onions and cook until softened.
  • Cook the protein – Add ground beef (or chosen protein) to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned.
  • Season – Add garlic, salt, pepper, cumin, chili powder, and paprika. Stir well, then add water or broth and let simmer for 5–7 minutes.
  • Warm tortillas – Heat tortillas on a dry skillet or directly over a gas flame for a few seconds on each side.
  • Assemble tacos – Fill tortillas with the cooked meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and avocado. Top with sour cream, salsa, and cilantro.
  • Serve – Squeeze fresh lime juice over the tacos and enjoy!

Notes

Customize with your favorite toppings like pickled onions, jalapeños, or hot sauce.
Swap beef for grilled fish or shrimp for a seafood taco variation.
Store leftover taco filling in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
